Family is one of the 5 major social institutions, and marriage is an important concept to families. The definition of “marriage” and “family” change over time, and from place to place, also. Families, like other social institutions, adapt to social change. The purpose of this discussion is to examine several changes that are occurring within families in the United States.
Answer the following discussion prompts in 250-500 words (total):
Describe at least two changes in family types and structures since the 1950s in the United States. Ideas of changes include nuclear families, single-parent households, cohabitation, rates of divorce, same-sex couples, and staying single.
Compare and contrast different attitudes toward cohabitation (you may describe your own, and compare that to those to others you know). Are there any sociological benefits or costs for couples who live together before marriage? What do studies show about the relationship between cohabitation, divorce, and domestic violence?
Apply one sociological perspective (chapter 1), and define, cite, and apply as many terms as applicable from the lesson and course content to your analysis.
Reply to a minimum of 2 classmates with additional information, terms, theoretical perspectives, follow-up questions, and authentic discussion interactions. Also, respond to others who have responded to you. Lackadaisical responses will not be accepted.
You will be assessed on:
Successfully answering the discussion prompt with originality and accuracy, and while following directions.
Accurately including and applying important terminology from the textbook and course content.
Citing and referencing all materials consulted using MLA, ASA, or APA.
Participation, Timeliness, and Quality of posts and replies.
