Researching any topic is complicated by the volume of information and the number of possible information sources available. Often times, you’ll find that as you read and gather more information, your knowledge expands and wanders, and your research direction may shift a bit. Conducting research is often a circular process where initial search strategies evolve into revised strategies and research steps must be retraced. a) The research log is a tool for recording the research process or activities. It prevents:
repetition of searches, and
duplication of effort
b) The research log assists with:
assessing choice of sources & research strategy
organization of research time
documentation of sources
planning for future research
c) Recording the process you go through to conduct your research:
communicates that the instructor values that process and
recognizes that when students have acquired good search skills, you will find better, more relevant sources and produce a better product
**Helpful hint: Scan the Bibliographies/References/ Works Cited and in-text citations of your “best” sources to gather related relevant articles for your research.

How to Turn in Your Assignment
Upload the assignment documents to Webcourses by the due date. Contact UCF Technical Support at 407-823-0407 if you need help. a) Your completed Research Log
b) A one-paragraph reflection of your experience in keeping this log. Include the following: What challenges did you face? What were your most and least favorite parts? What was the most significant takeaway from completing this assignment?
_______________________________________________________________________
Objective: To keep an organized and detailed report of your nine (at least) sources related to your research question. This will aid you in writing the next writing assignment, the Literature Review, and eventually, the Final Research Proposal.
Audience: Your peers and your professor.
Format: A document that details at least nine credible, scholarly, academic sources. Refer to the student example and follow the format given below in Procedure #4.
Student example: 1102_RL_Sample.pdf Download 1102_RL_Sample.pdf _______________________________________________________________________
Procedure:
In order to complete this, you’ll need to do the following:
1) Diligently become familiar with UCF Library ToolsLinks to an external site., don’t be afraid to call/contact/chat with a librarian for help–it’s their job to do so, and they want to do so! You can check out Google Scholar (Links to an external site.), too.
2) Put time aside regularly to work on finding relevant articles to prevent burnout. There is no magic formula for research, ask any accomplished researcher; it’s a matter of trial and error, so do not get frustrated and give up. Tip: Many times, a source’s bibliography will list related sources you can use, too.
3) Your final deliverable for this assignment will be a typed report of your findings. Please adhere to all guidelines.
4) Follow the Research Log format: This is not an essay but is a formal record of your findings. Be sure your document is in Word or PDF, uses Times New Roman 12-point font, and is clearly organized for the audience. Include your main research question, and all of the following information for 1-9, a-f below and as seen in the student example above.

Be sure to distinguish between what you paraphrase and what are direct quotations. Include page numbers, if applicable):
This section (d) should be at least 100 words for each source.
e) Evaluation of material (How accurate, thorough, and reliable does the article seem? How does it fit with other sources? How/what do you think it contributes to your research question)? ):
