Enter the zip code where you lived during your k-12 years. If you lived in multiple places, as several
of you have, please choose one location.
Once you have selected your designated zip code you must select an outcome you would like to map.

people decided to leave or remain in the area. You can choose to look at any combination of variables
(there are many to choose), but please choose at least three to compare. Then, select a demographic
to focus. You can choose, for instance, Black women or white children.
Once you have made your selections you are to compare the outcomes of different groups. Look at
graduation rates, employment, income, and/or incarceration rates between different racial, gender and
income levels in the area. For this final assignment I want you to critically consider the differences
you see and reflect on how these environmental conditions impact opportunity. Make sure to keep
track of the percentages as you must include these data in your response. As you study the data,
think about what privilege and opportunity means for different groups.
In the final part of this project, I ask that you search for news articles concerning educational (e.g., K12 grade, college, adult education) opportunity improvement in the town or city you selected. If it is
difficult to find data for that particular location, you can zoom out to the state level. Please locate two
articles from regional or national newspapers on this topic of opportunity, and share the ways that
the efforts described in the articles address points raised in your initial research.
Based on your research, respond to all the following questions in a 2000-word (minimum; include
word count at the end of your paper), Times New Roman in a Word document:
1. What do these differences mean in the context of education? Is education the great equalizer
when so many other factors contribute to an ecology of inequality?
2. Think on your own experiences. How do your experiences with family, income, your
neighborhood, and school contribute to the experiences you have today? Are you better off?
Do you have a chance at truly being better than your parents’ or grandparents’ generations in
terms of income, mobility and employment? Why or why not?
3. What is the task for schools in addressing these problems? What if anything, could potentially
be done by schools to address these inequalities? Provide some examples of how schools in
the area could address the problems.
4. Share what you learned in the second phase of your research. What did you learn from the
two articles about specific ways are educational opportunities trying to be improved? And,
what kind of intersection did you find between the data raised in the first phase of your
research and those points in the second phase (i.e., the newspaper phase)? As always, be
