The purpose of this essay is to make a statement (thesis, opinion, main idea, argument)
about a work of literature about which you have already written a reading response.
Your statement should further develop some aspect of the discussion you began in one
of your first three reading responses. Based upon that initial response, as well as your
observation, interpretation, evaluation and analysis of that literary text, your essay
should engage the literary text at the center of your discussion, developing and or
supporting your ideas with a discussion of textual evidence. As a rule, this project is
based on one of your first three responses, so you should consider this project to be an
extension of that response or some part of it. The work of the class during this time will
be to turn your response into a formal essay project. The workshops associated with
work on the projects are very important so do not fail to do them.
Please follow the directions carefully because they are designed to keep you on track,
through the process of selecting a response, developing an argument, working with
evidence, organizing your ideas into sections and paragraphs, and managing citations
and integrating cited material.
